What is coronavirus/COVID-19?
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. COVID-19 is a new disease, caused be a novel (or new) coronavirus that has not previously been seen in humans.
What are the symptoms?
Current symptoms reported for patients with COVID-19 have included mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
What can I do to protect myself?
When attending public events or activities with large groups of people, do your best to avoid close contact with people who are sick, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and above all else, do your best to regularly wash your hands with soap and water, and clean/disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaners. Make sure to always wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom.
What is EXPO NM doing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?
EXPO NM will supply all events taking place across the Fairgrounds with multiple hand-sanitation stands, which we encourage all patrons and participants to use frequently. These stands will be located in numerous locations, and will be easy to find and accessible to anyone on the grounds.
Have any events been rescheduled or canceled?
As you likely know, the public has recently received confirmation of the first cases of novel coronavirus (COVID – 19) in New Mexico. While this is not a cause for panic, it does require that we take measured steps to try to prevent a widespread outbreak.
From what we know, while the vast majority of individuals who get the virus have mild illness, it is dangerous for those individuals who are elderly and/or immunocompromised. For those individuals, we have been advised by medical experts, that we must employ common sense mitigation strategies.
With this in mind and under the direction of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, we will be canceling all events hosted by EXPO New Mexico for the month of March. We understand this has unfortunate implications but believe that it is more important to mitigate any risks at this time. For those communities that have been able to slow the widespread progression of the virus, their success has been based on limiting crowd interactions.
First and foremost, we want to be good partners in ensuring the health and safety of our fellow New Mexicans, and therefore are canceling these events consistent with Governor Lujan Grisham’s direction, the Department of Health and the CDC.
